Meet the Bill Gates of The Philippines

We have learned a lot of rags to riches stories especially nowadays that social media has been a great platform to people all over the world. Many of us definitely knew about Bill Gates. William Henry Gates III is a 64-year-old American business magnate, software developer, investor, and philanthropist. He is best known as the co-founder of Microsoft Corporation with a net worth of 107.4 USD.

But would you believe that we have our very own version of “Bill Gates” in the Philippines? He is no other than Diosdado P. Banatao from Cagayan. He is a 73-year-old Filipino-American entrepreneur and engineer working in the high-tech industry. He is known for single-chips and PHY chips. He is credited for developing the first 10-Mbit Ethernet CMOS with Silicon coupler data-link control and transceiver chip. It was the first system logic chip set for IBM’s PC-XT and the PC-AT, and the local bus concept and the first Windows Graphics accelerator chip for personal computers. He also co-founded Mostron, Chips and Technologies, and S3 Graphics.

He is now the Founder and the Managing Partner of Tallwood Venture Capital, CEO of Ikanos Communications, and Chairman of the Philippine Development Foundation. In the Philippines, he is one of those generous and kind-hearted individuals who helped out a lot of deserving Filipino students who have bright futures in the field of engineering and technology. He even assists Californian high school students of Filipino blood who are pursuing a college education in engineering through his “Banatao Filipino American Fund”. He also donated a computer center in his alma mater at Cagayan Valley which makes it the only public in the country to have the most modern computer network.

But even before he becomes a very successful man and achieved everything he has now, he has a rag to riches stories that are also a great inspiration to many people. His father was a farmer and his mother was a housekeeper. During his childhood, he walked barefoot at the dirty road just to go to his school, Malabbac Elementary School. He finished his secondary education at the Ateneo de Tuguegarao. After high school, he took up Bachelor of Science in Electric Engineering from Mapua Institute of Technology where he graduated cum laude.

He joined Philippine Airlines after college to be a trainee pilot but he was later pirated by Boeing where he worked as a design engineer of “Boeing 747” in the United States. He had the opportunity to stay in the US that is when he took up his Master of Science in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Stanford University in 1972. He even met Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak when he joined “Homebrew Computer Club”. He is indeed a great inspiration to a lot of Filipinos because even though he experienced poverty and a lot of challenges before, he did what he needed to do to achieve everything he has now and helping other people as well.
